Friends of Freedom Park began in 2001 as a citizens’ group formed under the auspices of the Prescott Foundation to help the City of Prescott develop and fund a proposed learning center on the Wisconsin Great River Road National Scenic Byway. The initial organizers applied for and received three federal grants used to get the project started. Over the course of the next four years, additional funds were raised from local businesses and individuals to complete the project. The park was completed in 2006 with all the amenities and facilities originally conceived as essential parts of the interpretive plan. The Prescott Foundation continues its support and backing of the Center’s mission to provide a rich, high quality learning experience for everyone who visits the park.
Your tax deductible donation helps support the Friends of Freedom Park in their mission to provide:
- Free environmental education programs for Prescott School children. Since 2006, over 2,600 local students have participated in free environmental education programs.
- Low cost after school programs, summer camps, and family and adult education programs. Since 2006, over 11,300 participants have enjoyed our over 300 educational programs.
- Exhibits sharing our history and heritage. Learn about the history of Prescott, Native Americans, the uniqueness and roles of the Mississippi and St. Croix river, native plants and wildlife, etc.
- Welcome and hospitality to visitors from around the world while strengthening the local economy. Since 2006, over 60,000 visitors from 50 states and 38 countries have visited the Center.
- A gathering place for community events such as Earth Day, raptor releases, Kick Off to Summer, National Night Out, Prescott Daze and many more.
- A legacy of understanding and appreciation of Prescott’s unique natural resources including wildlife and flora, the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers, and geology.
- The availability of space and facilities to rent for family & class reunions, weddings as well as other types of gatherings.
- The opportunity to attend our “Taste of Freedom” premier fund raising event. Held the second Saturday of March, the Center is transformed into an elegant tasting room where you can enjoy fine wines, imported and domestic beers and a savory assortment of cheeses. A complimentary array of tasty appetizers provided by area restaurants. A silent auction is also part of the festivities.

Leave a Legacy with Butterfly Garden Gift Bricks
Friends and loved ones can now be honored with engraved gift bricks in our beautiful butterfly garden with its magnificent tiled bench and waterfall. Your purchase of a brick will help us complete this special children’s area, alive with butterflies and color and a great place for photographs. You can choose 4" x 8" bricks ($50/each), 8" x 8" bricks ($100/each) or a colored butterfly tile ($250/each). Your gift brick donation will be a lasting legacy for those you love.

Interested in helping out at Freedom Park? We are always looking for people to greet the public and support the programs at the Great River Road Learning Center. For those who enjoy gardening, Freedom Park has volunteer gardeners who meet on Thursday evenings to maintain our lovely native plant gardens.
Volunteers are the backbone of the Great River Road Visitor & Learning Center. Through your volunteer efforts you add to the quality of life in our community and provide services unique to this community for others to explore and enjoy. The Friends of Freedom Park is committed to making your volunteer experience rewarding. We encourage you to try out several different volunteer positions and to suggest alternative ways to use your specific skills or knowledge.
To maintain your volunteer status, we ask that you agree to serve a minimum of 100 hours each year. This is approximately 8-9 hours/month.
Benefits of being a Great River Road Learning Center Volunteer:
- The reward of hearing how much visitors enjoy the Center and the Park and appreciate your contributions to their experiences.
- Receiving the Tips and Tidbits volunteer newsletter and the Freedom Flyer newsletter.
- A basic annual $35 Osprey membership (100 volunteer hrs/year) which includes a 10% discount on non-sale gift shop items.
- Invitations to special events
- Regular updates and notices of our educational programs including the opportunity to register in advance for classes and events with restricted attendance.
- Invitations to volunteer potlucks and appreciation events.
