15 Stories for 15 Years! Story #3...
We’re featuring 15 stories for our 15th anniversary! 2021 is the Great River Road Visitor & Learning Center's 15th year at Freedom Park. To celebrate, we will share 15 stories that highlight important moments in our history, remarkable people we've met along the way, lessons learned, milestones reached, and how Friends of Freedom Park and the surrounding communities have supported each other over the years.
Story #3 — The land that is now Freedom Park has a long history going back thousands of years before European settlers and pioneers like Philander Prescott ever showed up on the scene.
In the early 19th century, this area was inhabited by Dakota and Ojibwe people. We are grateful for the ceremonial blessing a spiritual leader from the Prairie Island Dakota Community provided at our grand opening 15 years ago. And we are grateful for the opportunity over the years to hear from other tribal groups such as the Tomahawk Circle Drum Circle from the Lac du Flambeau band of Ojibwe.
We want to honor their legacy by amplifying indigenous voices in the years to come.
